HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION
______________________________________________________
HEALTH EFFECTS
ACUTE:
SWALLOWED: Boric Acid has a relatively low acute toxicity. Small amounts would
normally not cause any adverse effects if swallowed. Larger amounts may cause
gastrointestinal symptoms.
EYES:
Not an irritant. May cause reversible conjunctivitis.
SKIN: Not an irritant. No evidence of tissue damage. May cause slight irritation
on damaged skin. Boric Acid is not absorbed through intact skin.
INHALED: Product can not be inhaled due to paste formulation..
CHRONIC: A technical report issued by the National Toxicology Program
(USA) showed no evidence of carcinogenicity from a 2 year bioassay on Boric Acid in mice
fed doses of 2500 to 5000 ppm in the diet. No mutagenic activity was observed for Boric
Acid in four short term mutagenicity assays.
FIRST AID
SWALLOWED: If poisoning occurs contact a doctor or poisons information
center.
If swallowed, and if more than 15 minutes from a hospital induce vomiting preferably using
Ipecac Syrup AFP.
EYES: If in eyes hold eyelids open, flood with water for at least 15 minutes. If
irritation persists see a doctor.
SKIN: No effect expected on intact skin. If skin is damaged wash with soap and
water. If irritation persists see a doctor.
INHALED: Not a hazard due to paste formulation.
ADVISE TO DOCTOR: Observation only is required for adult ingestion
of <6 grams of Boric Acid. For ingestion in excess of 6 grams, maintain adequate kidney
function and force fluids. Gastric lavage is recommended for symptomatic patients only.
Haemodialysis should be reserved for massive acute ingestion or patients with renal
failure. Boric Acid analysis of urine or blood are only useful for documenting exposure
and should not be used to evaluate severity of poisoning or to guide treatment.
